When you go through a divorce with a child, the experience is different. This is because the child comes first. Every decision you make has to be in their best interest. And this includes preparing them for a life in two homes.

Moving between two homes can be challenging for your child, especially in the beginning. Ensuring they are prepared and employing effective strategies can substantially help.

Here is how you can do this:

Help them understand the custody schedule

You and your co-parent should develop a schedule that considers your child’s age, daily routine and your work schedules. For instance, a younger child needs more frequent contact with both parents. A custody schedule of a teenager should take into account their school schedule, extracurricular activities and social life.

After creating a schedule, help your child understand it. If they are younger, use visuals. For instance, using different colors, mark the days they will be with you and those they will be with the other parent in a week, and ask them to mark the following week.

Maintain routines

Maintaining routines in both homes is vital in helping your child adjust. It can be stressful for them to observe different routines every other day. Thus, consider keeping bedtime, homework schedule, mealtime, chores and house rules the same.

Keep their items in both homes

Your child constantly packing and unpacking, worrying about forgetting essential items, can make them feel more like a visitor in both households. It’s crucial to provide them with a sense of belonging and stability. Therefore, have their essential items in both homes. These include clothing, toiletries, school supplies and favorite items like blankets and toys.
